We use to give ours big thigh bones. They loved to knaw the big knuckle off first and then go after the stuff inside. Sue gets smaller (but still big) bones from time to time and they are very welcome by the herd. You are right, it can keep them busy and quiet, for a long time. We get Prime Rib every once in awhile and though we never have enough bones to go around, a couple of lucky dogs get to enjoy them. By the time they are down, it's down to very small pieces that I throw away. We've never had any problems with them... other than after a few days of scraping and chewing off grains of bone, it all comes out the other end and looks like sand.
I agree about the raw hide. We don't give that to our dogs either. We use to give them chicken strips, which they love, but it all comes from China and after the junk they have been sending into the US, we stopped buying it.
